Autana tepui in the Indigenous Municipality of Autana, Amazonas State, Southern Venezuela. This is the home of the Piaroa (Uwottuja) people with whom our founder, Dr Paul Oldham, lived and worked from the 1990s onwards. It is the heart of the Piaroa world with Autana tepui forming the trunk of the great tree of life from which the peoples of the mid-Orinoco received the plants they rely on today. As for so many other Amazonian peoples, today the rivers are becoming polluted by the activities of gold miners in the headwaters. Drug-traffickers and para-military groups also threaten indigenous governance of Uwottuja territory. Two Uwottuja environmental defenders from the Regional Organisation of Indigenous Peoples of Amazonas (ORPIA), Freddy Menare (2017) and Virgilio Trujillo Arana (2022), have been murdered in recent years.
