Under Decision 16/2, adopted at COP 16 of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the Cali Fund was established as a multilateral mechanism to ensure the fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of digital sequence information (DSI) on genetic resources. Companies that directly or indirectly benefit from the commercial use of DSI are expected to contribute to the fund. Specifically, entities exceeding at least two of the following thresholds—total assets of US$20 million, sales of US$50 million, and profits of US$5 million averaged over the preceding three years—are encouraged to contribute 1% of their profits or 0.1% of their revenue. These contributions are voluntary but set a precedent for industry accountability in biodiversity finance.

The table below aims to enhance transparency by providing insight into potential contributors to the fund. The companies listed below have previously filed patent applications containing genetic sequence listings. You can search for companies by country or sector using the drop down menus below. You can also filter and search through the whole table.

The Cali Fund Index is under active development and we welcome suggestions and corrections to improve it. For official guidance on the Cali Fund please contact the Secretariat of the Convention or your National Focal Point who will be happy to assist.
